Our People

Kathleen Fenton, MD

Dr. Kathleen Fenton is a congenital heart surgeon who had an academic practice in the United States before moving to Nicaragua in 2006 to do humanitarian work full time. She has had a long interest in ethics, and, motivated in part by her professional society committee work, decided to pursue formal ethics training at the Alden March Bioethics Institute of Albany. Seeking to combine her unique background in medicine, cardiac surgery, global health, and ethics, she came to the NIH in 2018. She is currently the Branch Chief of the Advanced Technologies and Surgery Branch in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at NHLBI, and an Affiliated Scholar in the NIH Department of Bioethics.
